Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of Google’s search results that answer a query directly and link to a small set of cited source pages. They are produced by a Gemini-based model that retrieves relevant pages from Google’s index and synthesizes a short answer.
Introduced broadly in 2024, AI Overviews now appear on a substantial and growing share of searches — estimates in 2026 range from roughly a quarter to nearly half of tracked queries, concentrated on informational and how-to intent. Independent studies (notably Pew Research) found that searches with an AI Overview lead to fewer clicks on traditional results.
Appearing as a cited source in AI Overviews is a core goal of Generative Engine Optimization. The full tactics — and the data on their traffic impact — are in the guides below.
